Akropong, Eastern Region – September 28, 2023 — As part of its ongoing commitment to public health and safety, Alpha Health Group Inc. implemented a voluntary drug screening initiative during the 2023 Akuapem Odwira Festival. Hosted in collaboration with Odwira Festival organizers and supported by local health authorities, the program aimed to promote a responsible and drug-free environment throughout this culturally significant celebration.
The Odwira Festival, held from September 25 to October 1, 2023, draws thousands of participants—from local community members and traditional leaders to diaspora returnees—celebrating unity, cultural heritage, and purification rituals; with such high attendance and lively festivities, ensuring a safe environment was of paramount importance.
Alpha Health Group introduced the screening station at the forecourt of the Okuapehene’s palace, which is central and a prominent location in Akropong, adjacent to the grand durbar grounds—a fitting venue following key events such as the path-clearing ritual and the unveiling of the new yam.
Over 500 individuals volunteered for screening during the five festival days, reflecting strong community engagement. Approximately 96% of participants tested negative, underscoring a largely clean and responsible festival atmosphere.
By promoting voluntary testing in a celebratory setting, Alpha Health Group emphasized personal responsibility and public wellness—aligned with Odwira’s spiritual and communal values of purification. Nana Kwayisi Okuapehene Okoboahene and a member of the Odwira committee, described the initiative as “a meaningful enhancement to Odwira’s tradition of renewal and respect for community health.”
The overwhelmingly positive response has inspired plans to elevate the program in future festivals.
